Cenu Edgar vytvořilo roku 1945 nově založené společenství MWA (Mystery Writers of America). U zrodu stáli Anthony Boucher, Clayton Rawson, Lawrence Treat a Brett Halliday. Od roku 1946 se každoročně udílí ceny nejlepším tvůrcům detektivního žánru a jejich prózám. Kategorie se v průběhu let měnily, kromě toho udílí MWA i další ceny (Raven, Grandmaster,Robert L. Fish Memorial Award, Ellery Queen Award, Mary Higgins Clark Award).
