Cena je pojmenována po gangsterské kočce z humorné sbírky básní T.S. Eliota (Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats). Každoročně členové Mystery Readers International udělují tuto cenu dílům s tématem záhad a tajemství v několika kategoriích. Cena je udělována dílům vydaným v roce předcházejícímu roku udělení. Udělování probíhá vždy na podzim na největším krimifestivalu USA – Boucherconu.
